There are several families we have known and been hanging out with ever since we started working downtown three years ago. Lonnie D is the momma in one of these families. And y'all, she is a gem. We love her. Next time you see me, ask me to tell you all about the bumble bee story, you'll love it.
Adam and Lonnie D have a special relationship. Mostly because he jokes around with her, and she teases him about his hair and beard and threatens to bring a razor and shave it off one Sunday. And I wouldn't stop her. Because I think we all know she'd be doing me a favor.
The other day, we were asking Lonnie D where she was planning on moving. We talked for a little bit about moving, and then mentioned to her that we were moving downtown too. She smiled and laughed and said, but not to my neighborhood. And we said "yup. To your neighborhood." She gave us a look like you've never seen, and said "Y'all ain't scared of NOTHING!" We laughed. And I cringed and tried to tell my heart that she was right, I wasn't scared.
But sometimes I am scared. Sometimes I would rather live where it's "safe." And it is during those times I have to cling to the promise that "Perfect love drives out fear." Because you know what Lonnie D went on to talk about? How she was so so glad that someone could teach her kids about love. Someone who would influence them besides the gangs and drug dealers. Someone who could help them with their homework. Someone who would LOVE them.
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”- Joshua 1:9
